About 50% of the world’s population lives in the tropical belt, with the fastest-growing cities of not yet industrialized developing economies, which is also the most vital reservoir of carbon on our planet.

Due to the lack of regulations on energy performance, manufacturing, and use of sustainable local materials, new buildings (both residential and tertiary) are mostly built without serious consideration of the local climatic context leading to excessive energy consumption to compensate for the discomfort caused by heat and humidity.

Tropical areas are most exposed to climate change hazards and disasters and if we want to limit global warming, the design of climate-resilient buildings will have to require special attention.

We have to plan our cities while preserving the vital reserves and biodiversity of our ecosystems.

Architecture is about improving the quality of life, and with climate change becoming ever more urgent, we believe that Tropical bio-climatic architecture and design will create the best balance between a building, the surrounding climate, and the comfort of our habitat.

Environ 50% de la population mondiale vit dans la ceinture tropicale, où se trouvent les villes en cours d’industrialisation, ayant des croissances parmis les plus rapides au monde mais c’est aussi le plus réservoir vital de carbone de notre planète.

En raison du manque de réglementations sur la performance énergétique et de fabrication et usage de matériaux locaux durables , les nouveaux bâtiments (résidentiels et tertiaires) sont construits sans attention au contexte climatique local entrainant une consommation excessive d'énergie pour compenser l’inconfort causé par la chaleur et l'humidité.

Les zones tropicales étant les plus exposées aux hasard et catastrophes liées au changement climatique si nous voulons limiter le réchauffement climatique global, la conception de bâtiments résilients au climat dans les régions tropicales devra faire l'objet d'une attention particulière.

Nous devons concevoir nos villes tout en préservant les réserves vitales et la biodiversité de nos écosystèmes.

L'architecture vise à améliorer la qualité de vie, et avec l’urgence du changement climatique nous pensons que des dispositifs bioclimatiques appliqués à l’architecture et au design tropical apporteront le meilleur équilibre entre un bâtiment, le climat environnant et le confort de l’habitant.

We are based in the Congo and Mozambique, and we work all over Africa!

Hello! My name is Valérie Mavoungou Rodriguez , and I am the founder of l’Atelier tropical. I graduated from Paris Belleville National School of Architecture (ENSAPB) , France, in 2012 with a master’s and professional license in Architecture.

I did my first steps by collaborating alternatively with my studies in the seraglio of well-known Parisian architecture and landscaping agencies. In addition to this European training, I attended several Asian institutions, to learn more about sustainable design and construction processes suitable to tropical climates such as the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokyo, Japan, the French Institute of Far East in Cambodia, and the School of Architecture at Kyung Hee Dae University in South Korea.

From Congolese and Ukrainian origins, born and raised in Africa, I kept in mind the objective to work on sustainable projects amid the continent and global south, and in 2016, l’Atelier Tropical was created in order to propose tailor-made and qualitative services with modern African aesthetic, inscribed in their environment.

Since then I have been working with the support of locally skilled technical consultants and partners on various projects in West, East, and today Austral Africa, in rewarding local building methods and juggling between missions of a traditional architect and construction project manager: from conception to specifications, coordination, site controlling, trading and purchasing structural and finishing materials locally made or internationally imported.

Bonjour ! Je suis Valérie Mavoungou Rodriguez fondatrice de l’Atelier tropical. Je suis diplômée de l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris Belleville (ENSAPB) , France, en 2012 . ( DE HMONP : Master en Architecture et Habilitation à la Maîtrise d’Ouvrage en son Nom Propre )

C'est en alternance avec mes études que j’ai fait mes premiers pas dans le sérail d'agences d'architecture et de paysagisme parisiennes. Parallèlement à mon cursus Européen, et dans une optique d'apprentissage de procédés de conception/construction soutenables en climats tropicaux humides, je me suis tournée vers des formations dans plusieurs institutions Asiatiques, telle qu'à la Shibaura Institute of Technology à Tokyo au Japon, à l’Ecole Française d’Extrême Orient au Cambodge, ou encore à la School of Architecture de la Kyung Hee Dae University en Corée du Sud.

D'origine Congolaise et Ukrainienne, et ayant passé la plus grande partie de ma vie en Afrique Sub-Saharienne, j’ai toujours gardé en tête l'objectif d'exercer ma profession sur le continent, avec une conscience écologique, aussi en 2016 naît l'Atelier tropical, dans le but de proposer un service sur mesure , et des projets à l'esthétique moderne , inscrits dans leur environnement tropical .

Navigant entre l’Afrique centrale, de l’Ouest, de l’Est et aujourd’hui l’Afrique Australe , en collaboration avec des partenaires et bureaux d’études expérimentés, je travaille sur des missions de maître d'oeuvre traditionnelles mais aussi d’entrepreneur, avec des solutions adaptées aux contraintes de construction locale : conception, coordination et suivi de chantier, négoce et achat de matériaux, dans le respect des normes homologuées internationales appliquées aux marchés de la construction.
